Why do my knees hurt when I climb stairs?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Stairs load knees at 3-4x body weight, so kneecap tracking problems and early arthritis complain there first. Quad and hip strengthening is the main fix; locking, swelling, or giving way needs an exam.
What to do
- Strengthen quads and hips - the mainstay for runner knee (patellofemoral pain).
- Note the pattern - worse going down and stiff after sitting points to the kneecap.
- Ice flares and pace the stairs - load management while you build strength.
- Get locking, swelling, or giving-way checked - NIAMS flags these as structural signs.
